Sun Cellular takes lead in mobile postpaid market
Sun Cellular, a subsidiary of Gokongwei-owned Digital Telecommunications Inc (Digitel), was the first telecom to hit 1 million in postpaid subscriptions.
As of June 2010, Ayala-owned Globe Telecom had 909,466 postpaid subscribers. Meanwhile, PLDT group’s wireless unit, Smart Communications had a total of 439,844 postpaid subscribers for the first half of 2010.
“We achieved this never-before-attained milestone only seven years from start up and with our rivals enjoying a ten-year headstart. We are getting seven out of every ten new postpaid subscribers,” said Charles Lim, Sun Cellular business unit CEO.
Sun Cellular, which started commercial operations in 2003, has already covered the whole country with almost 7,000 cell sites. Sun Cellular has been offering unlimited postpaid plans for as low as Php 350/month since 2005. The plan includes unlimited call and text privileges.
Sun Cellular pioneered the unlimited service in the country. Its rivals had followed suit but offered them only as promos. Sun Cellular’s unlimited service is a product in itself, which means it is a permanent offering.
