Globe GCASH and Smart Money are the two mobile payment services available in the Philippines today. Here are the comparison between Globe GCASH and Smart Money in terms of registration, transaction method, deposit, sending money, withdrawal, security and other features.

Transaction Method

  • Most Globe GCASH transactions are SMS-based. Globe has a GCASH menu but it has to be downloaded first.
  • Most Smart Money transactions are done using the Smart Menu. Smart Menu comes pre-installed with Smart Money Menu.

Registration/Sign-up Process

  • To sign-up for Globe GCASH, all you need to do is register via text message. Once registered, you can already start using GCASH.
  • To sign-up for Smart Money, you first need to register thru Smart Menu or SMS. Then apply for a Smart Money Mastercard at your nearest Smart Wireless Center and present a valid ID. It may take up to 7 days for the card to arrive. You cannot use Smart Money unless you get your card.

Applying for a Smart Money account can take up to seven days or more. Meanwhile, applying for GCASH only takes 5 minutes. No need to go to any Globe business center. No need to present a valid ID. But the only problem with GCASH is that their sign up process is too easy. Since Globe doesn’t require any proof of identification upon sign up, the system can be easily manipulated by scammers by creating a fake GCASH account.

Account Number

  • When you register for GCASH, your GCASH account number is your 10-digit mobile number.
  • When you register for Smart Money, there are two account numbers you need to remember – your Smart Money account number and your 16-digit Smart Money Mastercard number. The 16-digit Smart Money Mastercard number will be used for making transactions.

When using Smart Money, memorizing long account numbers can be quite confusing and may make it difficult in doing transactions. With GCASH, you only need to give your mobile number as your account number. It is not only easier to remember but the recipient can also be rest assured they have the mobile number of the person they are transacting with.

Deposit/Cash In

  • To deposit money in your GCASH wallet, you need to go to a Globe Business Center or any accredited GCASH partner and request to do a cash-in transaction. You need to present a valid ID.
  • To deposit money in your Smart Money account, you need to go Over The Counter (OTC) at any Smart Wireless Center, BDO branch or any Smart Money accredited outlet.

Sending Money

  • Sending money from your GCASH wallet to another GCASH wallet costs Php 2.50/transaction to be deducted from your prepaid/postpaid account. A confirmation message will be sent to both the sender and the receiver after a successful transaction.
  • Sending money from your Smart Money account to another Smart Money account costs Php 2.50/transaction to be deducted from your prepaid/postpaid account. A confirmation message will be sent to both the sender and the receiver after a successful transaction.

ATM Card/Debit Card

  • GCASH ATM card can only be used for withdrawing money from GCASH account. Applying for a GCASH ATM card costs Php 100.00.
  • Smart Money Mastercard is a debit card. Aside from withdrawing money, it can also be used to purchase at any store that accepts Mastercard, even online. Applying for a Smart Money Mastercard costs Php 120.00.

Smart Money Mastercard is more flexible than GCASH ATM. Smart Money Mastercard can be used for both purchasing and withdrawal. While GCASH ATM can only be used for withdrawal of funds.

Withdrawal/Cash Out

  • To withdraw funds from GCASH account, visit your nearest Globe Business center or any accredited GCASH partner, request a cash-out transaction and present a valid ID. Some Globe Business Center may charge a fee. You can also use your GCASH ATM card to withdraw from any ATM nationwide. ATM withdrawal fee is Php 20.00.
  • To withdraw funds from Smart Money, you can visit your nearest Smart Wireless center or use your Smart Money Mastercard to withdraw at any BDO ATMs nationwide. ATM withdrawal fee is Php 3.00.

With Smart Money Mastercard, you can withdraw funds from your Smart Money account for only Php 3.00 per withdrawal at any BDO ATMS nationwide. Smart obviously wins here.

Security

  • GCASH has no security feature.
  • Smart Money Mastercard has a lock feature that prevents your account from making online purchases when it is locked. So unlock your account only when you need to shop online. It auto-locks after 10 minutes. Unlocking fee is Php 2.50/unlock and will be deducted from your prepaid load/postpaid account

Conclusion: GCASH’s easy sign-up process may have attracted a lot of users and they seem to have no problems adopting to the SMS-based sending of money. Now they have more subscribers than Smart Money. But only a few realize the advantage of using Smart Money. Smart Money’s long registration process can be quite confusing at first. But after registration, the rest of the transactions are hassle free. Starting from the simplicity of Smart Menu, the flexibility of Smart Money Mastercards, and the low cost withdrawal thru BDO ATMS, Smart Money offers more than GCASH.

  1. Globe GCash has now a Suspend feature wherein you can suspend your account. Just dial *143# and then select GCash and then select Account and then Suspend. In that way, your account is safe and secured but you can still cash-in.

I’ve been using SmartMoney for a quite more than a decade now. It started when this feature or services been added. It has had a separate Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card intended when you use your Mobile Number with Standard Text Key (STK) for Smart Money and it has already an Actual Generic Card and pre-activated as long you Cash-In at any Smart Wireless Center (SWC) or First E-Bank (now Banco De Oro). Then you can enjoy paying it with any MasterCard logos establishment, but it is not safe because anybody can use it. You can apply for personalized card by filing-out form in the SWC but is not mandatory. You can pay also your bills thru its STK Menu. This time, all public financial transactions are governed by the Banko Sentral Ng Pilipinas (BSP). SWC issued any SIM with pre-activated SmartMoney but has no actual card and can be personalized right away by queueing and registering at STK, use paying bills, fund transfers, online transactions and transactions does not requiring and actual card. But it is necessary to apply for an actual card for security purposes of the money. In terms of GCash. In regards to Globe GCash, it happened that this Globe’s Innovative Service been launched with BSP Terms & Conditons. It is pre-activated also and apply for personalized card, you can pay your bills, fund transfers and online transactions (Megalink). For me, these two added services of our communication providers has its own peculiarity and one must have them. Only remarking that I almost getting bored in registering my Globe Telecom, Inc (GTI) GCash Personalization because you will apply it tru online, that almost two (2) months that it is in offsite status. GTI centers can not entertain this service. SmartMoney can be loaded if you have Bancnet members bank through STK (Mobile Banking). GCash, if you have Bank Of The Philippine Islands (BPI) account.

  8. SMART MONEY is useful incase u need cash at night, u can withdraw cash at ATM that accepts MASTERCARD… its life saving kasi na aksidente yung kaibigan ko last sunday 10 pm… pinuntahan ko sya para tulungan kasi kulang ang pambili ng gamot. My SMART MONEY provided me cash… sa palagay ko kung GCASH yung gamit ko na wlang ATM hindi q sya matutulungan agad ksi kailangan q pang maghintay nag umaga pra kumuha ng cash… sa SMART MONEY may bayad ung transaction BUT ITS WORTH IT!

  9. mas maganda ng di hamak ang gcash kaysa sa smart money, sa gcash, ang cash in is FREE! sa smart may bayad pa rin. and sa gcash, even without applying for a card, you can use its many features. pra kang may cardless bank account, and madami din silang partner outlets na pde ka mag transact (cash out/in). at the best talaga yung napakaraming free features gaya ng bills pay, at buy load, sa smart kasi may addtl charge pa, and take note, pwede mag buy ng load to other networks ang gcash, im actually using it as business na, patungan mo lng ng piso every transac kikita ka na, plus pa kung tm/globe loloadan mo may rebate ka pa! globe gcash is the best

  10. This has to be updated. GCash now offers a lot more mobile banking transactions and features very much similar to your bank-issued atm cards. Aside from withdrawals, GCash card can also be used for purchases/payments via pos terminal. It also has GCash American Express Virtual Pay which allows you to do online shopping on international sites such as itunes or ebay. All GCash subscribers are also required to undergo the KYC process as mandated by the BSP, for security purposes. It also has the GCash Mobile App or *143# menu listing down all available GCash features such as money transfers, remittance, paybills, buy load, etc, which becomes even more convenient for a GCash registrant.

  17. ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT SMARTMONEY ESPECIALLY IN PURCHASING ONLINE, IS THE FACT THAT IT HAS A “LOCKING” SECURITY SA SMART-MOBILE PHONES MO, WHICH MEANS, NORMALLY, NKALOCK XA, UNLESS IN UNLOCK MO PAG MAY BABAYARAN KANA SA INTERNET THAT YOU WANT TO BUY. TAPOS ITS SAFE COZ, KAHIT MKALIMUTAN MO XA ILOCK, IT WILL LOCK BY ITSELF AFTER FEW MINUTES OF NO TRANSACTIONS, G CASH IS FAR WAY BEHIND SA SMART MONEY. WALANG PAGKAIBA ANG G-CASH SA GLOBE-BANKO,THEIR ONLY USE IS LOCALLY,NOT LIKE SMART MONEY VIST MY SITE TO KNOW MORE ALL ABOUT DEBIT CARDS THAT CAN BE USED TO BUY ONLINE AT….www.shopbycards.com

  18. THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF SMART MONEY OVER G-CASH, IS THE FACT THAT SMART-MONEY IS POWERED BY THE PARTNERSHIP OF BDO AND MASTERCARD-INTERNATIONAL, THATS WHY YOU CAN USE IT TO PURCHASE ONLINE OR OVER THE INTERNET, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER MASTERCARD CREDIT CARD-ALTHOUGH, ITS JUST A DEBIT CARD… I BOUGHT MY DOMAIN NAME http://WWW.SHOPBYCARDS.COM AND MY WEB-HOSTING USING MY SMART MONEY. BUT G-CASH CANNOT DO THAT.

  19. I prefer GCASH! Sa smart kurakot talaga, kelangan mo p ng personal load para makagamit ng smart money at makapag send ng load, unlike sa gcash napaka smooth ng transaction!

  21. Other thing, you may also opt to visit nearest Globe store to request for an updated simcard. this will cost u 50php. where the gcash menu is already part of globe simcard. 😉 other thing, g cash card is more fashionable than smart money card. More sellers online requires gcash payment for it is more convenient.

  25. I think downloading the GCASH menu is advised only for those who are using Globe SIMs issued before Feb 2009. Downloading is similar to BPI Mobile Menu’s downloading instruction here https://news.txtbuff.com/bpi-mobile-banking-on-globe-sms-based/You may also want to look at this site. http://jrocas.com.ph/archives/globe-gcash-menu-for-free/

  28. there’s something wrong with this article. you can use smart money even without getting a smart money mastercard. just register via text or menu and you will automatically get your 16 digit smartmoney number, you can use this even without the card. to claim the cash, you will just present a text msg containing the reference number to any smartmoney authorized centers. you can also use your 11 digit mobile number for transactions instead of 16 digit. But it is better to get your SMARTMoney Mastercard, it’s convenient to use for purchasing goods in any mastercard establishment and for shopping online, or booking a flight.
